Kind of reminds me of the Worldwar series, where there's an invasion by lizardlike space aliens right in the middle of World War II, and various human factions are forced to put aside their differences to fight back against the aliens, and you get some crazy fusion weapons, using various technologies of various factions. At one point, the Soviets extract uranium, the Americans build an atomic warhead with it, and the Germans use their huge rail-transported gun to fire it directly into a landed starship; because it's just a dumb, heavy projectile, the counters that the aliens have that were intended to defeat missiles don't work.
