The original actor went into rapid decline due to wielding the ruby-hilted dagger from Shadar Logoth. The showrunners have fixed this in season 2 by using a prop instead of the real thing.
Man the actors' association really has to negotiate some better work conditions when it comes to dealing with cursed artifacts. Willem Dafoe still hasn't recovered from the Green Goblin mask.
