Holy fuck, this is one thing I don't miss about reddit, people are so willy nilly with the down votes and don't even explain why, I had to go back recently to ask a jewelery subreddit about information on buying something and my post and every comment got bombed even though I was being polite AF. On Lemmy, people will argue with you sure, but rarely will you just find you've got zero on your post unless you were outwardly being an ass

Man I don’t even downvote people I argue with unless they’re doing troll shit. A huge negative score can actually galvanize people’s bad takes, and make them triple down when they might’ve otherwise reconsidered their position.

It doesn’t even make sense from a “dunking” perspective because downvoting the top level comment DECREASES the visibility of your “dunk” reply. Reckon people are just petty lol

Same, if I disagree with someone I’ll respond, but they shouldn’t be downvoted for not sharing my opinion. But they are spewing some provably false bullshit I’ll downvote, especially if they double down on it. If they respond or edit and are like “ok, I was wrong,” I’ll remove that same downvote.

This is the way. Downvotes are for pseudoscience and bigotry, not harmless differing opinions.

Yeah that's because lemmy is way more of an echo chamber so everyone agrees with each other more.

That doesn't explain polite discussion of disagreements without down votes

I frequently see people get negative scores for politely expressing an unpopular political opinion. And people at c/UnpopularOpinion get downvoted for it all the time. Reddit is probably worse though

That happens here too.
