I assume he was arrested because he is a russian asset.
Regardless, he was doing business in France and not following its laws. So the official reason still makes more sense than your fantasies.

It's because he kept letting terrorists and child molesters get away with their crimes.
Governments would continually go to him and ask for help to save people's lives and he told them to fuck off.
