Rules:

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source.
Posts which titles don’t match the source won’t be removed, but the autoMod will notify you, and if your title misrepresents the original article, the post will be deleted. If the site changed their headline, the bot might still contact you, just ignore it, we won’t delete your post.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials or celebrity gossip is allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
7. No duplicate posts.
If a source you used was already posted by someone else, the autoMod will leave a message. Please remove your post if the autoMod is correct. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners.
The auto mod will contact you if a link shortener is detected, please delete your post if they are right.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

That's how it has been in the US. Now, though, if you already have a passport, you can renew online and take the picture yourself, and get it mailed directly to you.
The thing that makes getting a passport slightly tricky to begin with in some circumstances is needing proper ID. In the US, there's no generalized law saying that you have to have certain forms of ID. Most people use drivers licenses as ID, but obviously not everyone has one (by choice or as a consequence of drunk driving). There are a lot of people without ID, and there are ways to get ID, but they can be difficult for people without resources. A birth certificate is hard to get if you don't have one already, especially if you don't know where you were born.
Most states (maybe even all of them by now) offer a non-driver ID, which has just as much validity as ID as a drivers license, but isn't valid for driving.
All that ID does is prove residence, though, it doesn't prove citizenship. Most first-time applicants will also have to submit a birth certificate or other document proving citizenship. The USA has no other national document that proves citizenship. This service is for passport renewals, presumably the first time you apply for a passport you will still need to show up in person, with your documents.
It can be hit or miss with some particularly stupid government workers, but Passport Cards are very much a thing and qualify as Real ID Compliant.
As a passport it is only valid for like Canada and Mexico but it is well worth the extra 20 or 30 bucks when you get a passport. On travel it is a nice ID that you don't REALLY care if it gets stolen (since your Driver's License is back at the hotel). Also incredibly useful when you need multiple forms of ID for something.
But also would not be a horrible choice as a non-driver ID. Just a hassle to get one without a Driver's License because 'murica.
Only as valid as the government worker thinks it is. I had one of those and the passport office wouldn’t accept it as proof of identity. I wound up having to get a parent with a driver’s license to vouch for me, in addition to providing a ton of extra id like library card, school ids, etc.
You cannot walk into a post office and leave with a passport
That's exactly how you do it. It's not same-day, but if you really need a passport same day, you probably messed something up, lol.
If you need a passport super short notice (possibly same-day) you can go to one of a few passport offices and hope they can fit you in. I looked into it a few years ago when I lost my passport right before a big business trip. Logistically it wouldn't have worked for me (by the time I even got to the Boston office on that Monday my flight would have left), but yeah. Found my passport a few days later, tucked into a notebook.
