Their queen being on C7 is a better square for it. A5 is not a good square and they will have to move it. So while you kicked it out they didn't lose any tempo.

Moving bishop guards pawn and opens up middle of board for rooks.

The engine seems to think their queen move to A5 is a decent move (they lose 20 centipawns).

And my pawn move both kicks the queen and protects the pawn on A7.

Do you think it’s being rated worse because it fucks up my long term pawn structure? Or maybe because they could play pawn to A5 later and if they force the trade it opens a file for their rook? While me playing that bishop move would mean my bishop is stuck, but its protecting from their queen, the only piece that’s under attack, so in a sense it gives me an advantage elsewhere on the board? And then your right that it opens a rook file for me.

I think I’m starting to get it. Thanks.

Edit: Oh an also my bishop was unprotected as is and no easy pawn moves were available to protect it. Yeah this makes sense.

Their move of the queen to A5 was good because it developed a piece and attacked the pawn on A2.

You have two choices of protecting A2. Your move or the Bishop.

Engine doesn't think your move is good, so engine says only good move for white against Qa5 is bishop. Which makes it a decent move.

Yeah you don't want to mess up your pawn structure until you have to. Especially pawns that are protecting your king.
