RDR2 is a prequel. RDR is just that: ~~RDR2~~ RDR1

Its a retroactive sequel, yes

Sequel and prequel are relative terms. In the overarching view of the series release order: RDR1 is the prequel and RDR2 is the sequel

In the view of the game story, RDR2 is the prequel and RDR1 is the sequel

Now that is something I can't talk much about because I only played the prequel and not gonna pay R* the current asking price for an old game.
