Our current government did nothing to prevent this and in most cases seemed to just be clearing the path.

Entirely by design. I can't see anyone who makes it to president being willing to risk even the potential of the same thing being done to them for the sake of the people they govern.

Don't let them confuse you, no matter how they frame it - the government does not serve you, it serves the establishment and its interests.
