This game is awesome! Yakuza games have so so so much packed into them for the price.

Some long term fans were turned off because it has a new protagonist and it's turn based instead of a brawler.

Well I hate to break it to them the new protagonist is amazing and the turn based system is rad as hell. It's a great steam deck game with a really well written story as well.

Even if you've never played a yakuza game, this a good starting point!

I'm midway through the Yakuza series (just finished 3) and was intending to finish before playing the Like a Dragon series, but it's taking a while because I need a break between games. If it's disconnected enough, I might alternate between them.

Should I wait to play this until I've finished the Yakuza series, or are they disconnected enough that I wouldn't spoil anything by jumping in early?

I'd say you can safely alternate. Yeah there might be some minor spoilers, but to be honest you probably won't understand the context right now anyway, so you'd fill in the gaps when you go back and play the older games.

Past Like a Dragon needs to be played in a specific order though.

This was my first Yakuza game and can confirm the last paragraph!

I actually thought the rest of them would be turn-based too, which is part of the draw for me.

I love the lore reason for why it's turn based. Ichiban is the best.
