The owner of a meat business in western Michigan has been ordered to pay nearly $1,200 after a 17-year-old worker lost his hand in a grinder.

That's basically nothing. This will do nothing to prevent this kind of crap from happening again.

Seriously - the kid lost his hand, and they’re fined just over a grand?

I’m pretty sure some smart phones cost more than that. This might as well be pennies to the owner.

That poor kids hand barely registered as a cost of doing business. I'd be surprised if that's more than a weekor two of wages too.

In actuality, their insurance premiums are likely going to skyrocket. A hand injury is worth quite a lot in workmen’s comp, full amputation even more. They typically also pay out all medical, and in the case of them using the child in an illegal area of work, they can likely also be sued.

That said, the fine is a fucking joke. It’s basically nothing. Hope the kid sues for all they’re worth.
