That's probably because of a mixture of things:

  • younger people are more likely to try out new SM
  • younger people are more likely to be liberal
  • many people here are fleeing from other SM that skews liberal (mostly Reddit)
  • the founders were largely socialist, so liberals probably felt more at home in the early days

At least that's my take.

That said, I want nothing to do with maga-style communities.

You forgot that Russian troll fans haven’t yet infiltrated Lemmy, but if the bot Registration reports are real, they’re on their way.

Reactionaries from different nations are heads of the same hydra. Russian tankies, USA magas, west Asian ISIS, etc . . . they all suffer from the same character flaws.

Those "russian" bots and troll farms are likely funded by American tankies/conservatives/terrorists.

Just the opposite, American tankies/conservatives/terrorists are actually partially funded by Russia. It's part of the plan outlined in Foundations of Geopolitics and there have been numerous instances of conservative organizations and individuals receiving money from Russian agents. The NRA I believe has gotten some nice sums from Russia.

I'll add that younger people are more likely to be targets of conservative animosity / demonized, not necessarily more liberal.

That's fair as well, but I think the reason for that is young people tend to be more idealistic and aggressive when pushing for their beliefs. That doesn't make it right, but I think it's important to recognize the motivations.
