Buy games once they're out and reviews don't claim it's a buggy mess

Eh, Steam has a great return policy. There's basically no risk to pre order on Steam.

There's also no benefit. Why go through the trouble of returning it when you can just buy it when you're ready? There's no harm in waiting a day or two after launch, and you can even buy it on release day. It's not like they're going to run out of licenses.

The benefit is preloading. I can play it at exactly the moment early access opens tomorrow.

Does preloading also let you download the day 1 patch early? Sincere question.

Not sure, but I'm sure it's smaller than the 90GB full game.
