You can pin a safety pin a little under the zipper pull, so when it tries to tug open the pin holds it shut and prevents it unzipping. You can also sew a hook and eye at the top to do a similar job of holding the edges together and taking any pulling.

I've used the pin thing but the pin I have doesn't work properly. I might try the hook and eye thing though. Need to go to Spotlight anyways to grab some fabric to fix a hole in a shirt I love.
