For the curious, the reason afterschool clubs are featured so heavily in anime is because afterschool clubs in Japan are a big deal. Every student is basically expected to join an afterschool club of some kind, and many join more than one if they’re something seasonal like a sport. The general perception is that if you’re not in an afterschool club, then you’re a delinquent or lazy.
