I broke a decorative plate recently and looked into that. I also have no experience working clay, but from what I understand, it requires specialized tools and materials and can take months to, clean, set and dry, and finish. However, there are services that will take broken items and repair them with this technique!
Yeah, I had a nice plant pot break this year and briefly looked into it and decided it wasn't for me, at least not for a $50 pot.
