Gotta factor in cost of living. I completely agree that Americans (like myself) tend to take for granted how privileged we are. But you really can't apply any single number to the nation when cost of living varies so wildly. And COL doesn't typically take loan debt into account either, which on average increases with income and is a huge burden on current working age Americans.
20% of my take-home pay (not gross pay) disappears into the void of loan debt.
