How? Literally how? Who at the company even had the power to replace the board running the company?

The employees. Apparently, nearly all of the employees (700 of them) signed a letter to the board saying that if they didn't all resign and bring back Altman, they'd quit en mass and join Microsoft's AI division.

Also, recently news has been coming out that the guy who orchestrated the ousting has a history of acting... weird. Like, religious cult leader wierd.

That's a hard thing to come back from.
