Flechettes were issued from airplanes or airships, canisters of up to 250 arrows. In March 1915, a French pilot fired 18,000 flechettes over German trenches in one day. As they fell, the arrows gained enough momentum to pierce soldiers from top to bottom. "Fliegerpfeil" in German and in English means "aviation arrow" or "flyer arrow".
