Been so meh these last couple of weeks. The same again today after work. It’s like… I don’t know… I just want to do nothing.

But… pulled my finger out for self-care Thursdays which has been hit and miss, but a good hit today. Still loving on the Aesop scrub I mentioned I while back. I’ve cleansed, scrubbed and put a face mask on. (I fully look like such a weirdo, my face is kind of bank robber material right now… 🤣)

So while I’m sitting here basting my face, a curious q (as I do), has anyone read any books or have any book recommendations for people who a) suck at meditation b) really struggle with positive affirmations and the like… (like find it [the language] a bit ick?). You know, for an eternal pessimist with a broken anterior cingulate.

It’s this weather. We’re all getting seasonal depression. Not enough sunshine and Vit D tablets is only good to a degree. I too feel bleh most days

meditation is not for everyone , it doesn't mean you suck at it

and I suggest you write your own affirmations eg "I am the type of person who ....." 'I am the type of person who does not ..."

That's what I do.

Thanks Seagoon. I guess before I decide something is really not for me, I try to dive a little into the why. I do have one sort of meditative app I listen to sometimes. I find myself so picky with sound and voices etc. and while I can sit quietly… I don’t know, sometimes I wonder if just sitting somewhere in nature and just observing is kind of meditative, too? (I’m still working on the affirmations thing, but I like the sound of what you wrote. Thanks so much.)

Meditation takes practice. It's not just something you're good or bad at, it's a skill, and you need to work at it to improve - pretty much everyone will suck at it to start

Not about positive affirmations, but insight meditation. Strong recommendation for mindfulness in plain English

I'm not much of a meditative person either, but being a busy mum and carer I've felt a need for time out. I've started attending a sound meditation at my local community centre, and while it's taken a few goes to get the hang of it, I've just come from there all blissed out after tonight's session. Now don't get me wrong, the ummmms and the ommmms and all the talk of Venus and cancer goes a bit far for me but meditation is a personal thing.

I don't know much about sam harris, but this is a no bullshit meditation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5oIEKjMdmA&ab_channel=EverythingisEverything I too dislike the woo angles of a lot of yoga, meditation and mindfulness stuff. Each to their own, but it breaks the sense of peace I get from guided meditation.

A friend taught me a simple breath exercise, which you can do anytime, be aware of how your lungs behave of course, but she said, 5 in 9 hold and 7 out. Which are arbitraty measures of time you count in your head. I try and count seconds, but it's more important you do it and not feel like you're struggling at any stage so go at your own pace obviously.
