Solved I have 2 accounts on different instances with the name JaymesRS. I created my original on Midwest.social because it was the one I liked best at the time, I created a second at literature.cafe later because I identified more with that community, but I wanted there to be some continuity between them. I kept the other around for backup though.

If I only sign in to one of those accounts I have no problem with comments showing up on federated communities, however, if I sign in to both and switch accounts then switch back I no longer see federated comments. I will see the number of comments listed, but when I open the thread it says no comments found. I can still see comments on my local community though.

I can fix this by uninstalling and reinstalling the app and re signing in to only one of the accounts. It seems like removing the accounts itself won’t resolve the bug. I have a third account with a completely different name on a 3rd instance too and that doesn’t seem to trigger the bug.

If I can offer any other answers or help, let me know.

My first assumption here is that your comment listing mode is set to Local instead of All. Try visiting a post and opening the sorting menu at the top right and making sure All is selected. When the listing mode is set to local, only comments from your instance will load. This would make sense being as the behavior goes away when reinstalling the app, and your settings are reset.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, please let me know and I will look into what may be happening here.

Please note that when you switch to guest mode, your listing mode is reset to Local, I’ll update this behavior in the next release.

That’s exactly what it was. It doesn’t seem to switch from all to local every time immediately, so it will seem to work for a bit. But I just tested it and played around and it was changed to local after a short while.

I’m not sure why I never seemed to get it to change for my 3rd account, but ¯\(ツ)/¯.

Thanks a ton.

Glad that took care of it. I’m not sure why the listing mode change is delayed when switching accounts, though I’ll look into that.

I’ve changed the behavior for the next release so that the listing mode only changes if necessary. For instance if you have the listing mode set to Subscribed and then switch to Guest Mode, the listing type will be changed so that feeds won’t load as empty in guest mode (since you can’t subscribe in guest mode, all feeds will fail to load).

I’ve also updated it to automatically switch to All listing mode rather than Local.

Feeds will now display a warning at the end to indicate if you’re viewing a filtered feed like this.

I’ll also look into storing the previous sort mode so that it will automatically switch back when exiting Guest Mode.

Thanks for the feedback!

Those are all great solutions to my problem. Thanks for making what in my opinion is the best Lemmy reader.
