It does end up being worse in practice because defederation is used as some sort of virtue signal. In real life walls are expensive, difficult to erect and there is always a group of people trying to take it down. In the fediverse walls are easier than having a polite disagreement. Admins don't understand the issues and will usually cave to the loudest rather than the correct voices. I'm hopeful nostr will address these issues over the next two years.

Really nice to hear that somebody feels the same. I thought I was the only one and was going crazy with this whole defederation bullshit. Everybody keeps talking about it like it's this amazing way to deal with things and I'm just like no it's not like why the fuck would I want to have 167 different accounts?

That is not beneficial at all. You make a great point, I've been seeing this on cabin too and a bunch of other instances where they're complaining about us and rooting for de federation. And after I read that I think to myself then what's the fucking point of using Lemmy then? Why the fuck am I even here?

If I want to see conservative shit all the time I can just go on Truth social or gab or gttr or rumble. That's not what I want I don't want to see politics all the fucking time. I'm on here because I want to have discussions about relationships, movies, I want to see memes, I want to answer questions and give people advice about their life situations.

And then we're getting sectioned off because of our politics? It just really quite frankly pisses me off. Especially with the holier than now attitude. It's like you're allowed to be on the left but God forbid if you're on the right.

Yeah when it comes to Noster I'll be honest, I use it to troll the fuck out of people on there LOL because no sir Can't Ban you only the users can block you and that's it and I love that shit so much because I can just keep trolling the fuck out of people LOL and not get banned it's hilarious.

I know I'm a fucking asshole but the only reason why I troll on there is because everybody talks about God damn Bitcoin it's like a cult it's fucking annoying.

Like there's no other content except for Bitcoin that's why I don't primarily use an Oster except for trolling. What are you hoping for a changes with no stir in the next 2 years? Do you think it will ever become like a Reddit alternative at all? Sorry this is long as fuck I think Lemmy's success will be temporary.

I'm really confident about that because the fact that everybody is moving from Reddit and coming on here and everyone's already de federating? That says a lot. I think everything's going to get sectioned off everyone will be in their own instances and then they're just won't even be a point of using Lemmy anymore

yea it makes me uncomfortable how hard bitcoin is being shilled on nostr. very inorganic

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah I know dude! That's why I started trolling on there LOL because I was like what the fuck is going on here like why is everyone just talking about nostr like no one's talking about anything else.

How is it even supposed to grow into different types of communities and stuff if that's all they fucking talk about?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bitcoin stuff is kinda annoying. I feel like Jack from twitter is giving a bunch of these programmers bitcoins to write nostr clients and relays and that is what's attracting them.

Anyways, eventually it will attract different users if we can make it easy enough to use.

I didn't expect the fediverse to be like it is so hopefully there won't be terrible surprises with nostr.

At face value it seems like a much better protocol for most things.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

True. It does seem line a better protocol. I hope when it develops, there is a reddit type of alternative. That would be cool

@Sexypink @masterofballs People are working on adding communities to nostr. Check out satellite.earth, https://nostr.kiwi/communities, and https://zapddit.com/feed

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Funny you say that. After we went back and forth on that, I noticed on amethyst that there are communities. I went on zappdit to but I don't like the UI or that there isn't an official app. I downloaded nostrmo. It won't upload my pictures and profile information but I'm really liking it it's like reddit. The only thing though, is on nostrmo, it doesn't have all the communities. Does it just need to be updated? I checked out kiwi but it won't load

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have not gotten communities to show up on amethyst.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I found it. Kinda hard to get to

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

yea, we need a nice link aggregator for nostr

I’m hopeful nostr will address these issues over the next two years.

Only thing that gave me a little pause when I was looking it over from your earlier post was Dorsey's name being associated. I don't know a lot about him or really have strong feelings but I just remember what twatter was like before Musk bought it and while I think it sounds like nostr has protections to prevent that sort of experience happening there (being a protocol and all), I admit I haven't done enough reading on it yet

That dude was on so many drugs and had no idea what was going on. He's talked about how he regretted much of what happened and he's been vocal these days about taking the power to ban away from big tech.

That said yes never again but if he wants to throw bit coins at someone who makes a good client I mean it only helps the ecosystem.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Good to know, I had thought he was complicit in the Twitter hivemind this whole time bc I thought I remembered something about him personally banning trump or something. Idk. Don't really remember and doesn't really matter.

Like you said, if he's serious about avoiding that kind of problem now, paying everyone, and creating open source code, I can get behind that
