I’m going to be honest, the whole blackout seemed pretty ineffective.
Also lmao at people complaining about the UI of Lemmy - did they fully expect a finished polished website to just be ready for us to migrate to?
A 2 day blackout was never going to do anything. I'm a little disappointed that we (r/gunners) aren't extending it indefinitely. But it seemed like there wasn't quite enough popular support for it.
And yeah, that's a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Turns out it costs time and money to build a site like reddit. Although honestly, most of the features that I personally miss are from apps like Reddit is fun or RES. Not so much from the main Reddit interface.
It's interesting how c/gunners has turned out to be one of the more active communities I'm a part of in Lemmy, looks like there's been enough of us who jumped ship (or at least tested the waters)
I kind of wish we had made it a 4 day blackout, just so it would encompass the beginning of the transfer window. We'd beat out every other Lemmy community no problem with the Rice memes alone
It should've been indefinite. It's also laughable that people think the Lemmy instance is a power grab, it's merely an alternative. As if people don't like to have an alternative.
Yeah RES is why I stay on old reddit and if it goes I'll seriously consider things simply because it allows me to tag users and keep track of people it's not worth engaging with, or if they're alts, or even just remembering who they are!
Yep. Setting a hard cutoff point of 48h limited the impact quite a bit. I’ve seen other subs go on “read-only” mode indefinitely and I wonder if r/Gunners would even entertain the thought, and should there be a vote for it I honestly doubt it’ll pass…
And yeah, Lemmy itself is just another platform like Reddit was before the little annoyances were added; most of what I liked wasn’t from Reddit but Apollo. Reckon Lemmy would do better once Mlem on iOS is out of beta or there’s a proper App around.
Mlem has promise, but it just needs to have more time and resources behind it.
Yeah, I'm disappointed by the community not wanting to go indefinite ngl
I ended up getting a tildes.net invite too. The UI is a lot more polished over there. But the devs are being really cautious with managing user load, so it’s not public/open yet.
From what I’ve read invited users can invite newer users themselves. Would you mind passing me an invite? I don’t know if there’s messaging here on Lemmy yet; guess you can DM on Reddit (same username)
Oh for sure, I can invite you! I deleted my accounts on Reddit (in protest, I only used Reddit because of Apollo). I think I just sent you a message through Lemmy. If that didn’t work, I can send it to you another way if you can think of another way.
They're also dynamically adding communities (the idea is that people will post to, say, sports.gunners and then once that gets popular enough it would get split off into its own community), which is a good idea, but it's nice to be able to make your own from the get-go.
I think it's a smart way to manage scaling your site but I think what made Reddit unique (and what Lemmy is replicating) is the ability to create your own little bubble in the world no matter how niche. I was aware of Tildes and still chose Lemmy instead for that reason.
Honestly, I'm starting to prefer the smaller community here on /c/gunners even compared to /r/gunners. Feels a little more personal.
I signed up for Tildes, Kbin, and Lemmy but that's just because I wanted to be on the trains early. I don't mind Tildes for general discussion (i.e. what video games are you playing or what's your opinion about this world event) but I don't think I'd enjoy talking about something that only affects us (Pepe being sold) on Tildes. I'm glad we have some semblance of options post-exodus.
As to your last point, I'm liking it a lot too, perhaps because there's a smaller percentage of lurkers? There's such a small population we all have to pitch in to get anywhere near what r/gunners was like. At least that's my theory.
Fully agree. I prefer that we already have /c/gunners here.
