I think the trick is to get in early on something that will be high demand.

Yea, and you have to do it basically instantly or it's no good and you just burned some of what little download credit you have on it. If they give you points for # of torrents you're uploading on I usually download a shitload of small things like comics or magazines and just let my points build up over time that way. It takes forever but it's safer than hoping to get lucky on a new upload of a movie or show actually taking off.

They can enforce that by requiring you to seed for x days/weeks/months just as easily. Ratio just limits people trying to start out from acquiring content (and adding to the number of available seeds).
