Two of the biggest games of this year are remakes. Dead Space and Resident Evil 4. Now don’t get me wrong, they’re both very good games but so were the originals.

So the question is…

Do we really need remakes & remasters or should publishers and developers spend the money, time and resources on new games and should more effort be put into backwards compatibility to enable people to play the original games on modern hardware?

I think there's a threshold for how often a remake is needed.

There are a lot of people that never played Resident Evil 4. It was like, old school PlayStation. The remaster was substantial and not only completely changed the game, but also brought it to a whole new generation.

Dead Space was just a cash grab and the old game was fine. I never even considered buying it.

Just like all games: vote with your wallet. We don't have to buy absolutely everything that gets released.

Remakes bringing the game to a new audience is a good thing however if the old games were easily accessible on new consoles I wonder if that would be necessary.

For me all playing through RE4 Remake did was make me want to play though the original.
