THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR KERBALKIND!

I first pirated ksp over ten years ago. I loved the game so much I bought it and both dlc. Worth every cent.

I've been playing ever since then for the last decade. And you know what?

I've never once been to Mun. Or outside orbit for that matter.

I've spent the last ten years designing fighterjets and advanced AA ground defenses. Why? Because I love this game and I love how I can ignore the base game and just enjoy myself making explosions.

Maybe one day I'll get bored. But it is not this day

There are three awesome milestones in KSP:

  1. Returning a surface sample from the mun
  2. Aerobraking and successfully landing on Duna
  3. Strap a spaceplane (or two for backup and easier mass balancing) to an interplanetary mothership bound for Jool. Then undock the spaceplane around Laythe, fly down and land on an island, and fly up again for docking.

I recently finished #3 in KSP2, and it feels even better there.

Best regards,
Proud kerbonaut since 2013

I have plenty experience getting to orbit, but it's mostly bad rocket science...and mad engineering. I'll get there eventually, but it's gonna be a very Orky way with lots of unnecessary explosives.

Getting to the mun is pretty easy to eyeball.
Launch when you can see it peeking over the horizon to the east.
Head towards LKO as you normally would (I generally aim for Time To Apoapsis of 40 seconds) until you're clear of the densest part of the atmosphere.
When in at altitude 50km or more, burn prograde until your orbit enters the munar Sphere of Influence. The prograde vector should in theory be close to the mun at this point. It's OK if it's lower. Try to get your Mun periapsis around 20k or thereabouts.
As soon as you're at your first ascensing or sescending node, you can fine tune your arrival. For efficiency I aim for equator, missing the mun by 10k meters - it allows for a pretty nice capture burn that allows you to continue directly to descent.

Damn I only understood about half of that. Listen, thanks, but I'm almost literally a monkey with a wrench here. I get the idea and concepts, I think, the eye ball tip works great for me, but the rest is a bit much for me to make any sense of.

I'm not trying to insult myself either, I know I'm smart in other areas. I just have some learning disabilities that make the rocket science and the math to get wonky.

mine were:

  • docking in lko for the first time
  • making my first well flying jet
  • making a working 100+ seater ssto
