Bits are nice and simple, whereas bytes can get really messy. Hurrah for historical baggage again.

This article just went with the binary prefixes, which makes sense for a sort article like this. Unfortunately, out there in the real world you’ll also encounter SI prefixes and some systems don’t even it clear which system they are using.
