Fuck Subscriptions

Naming and shaming all "recurring spending models" where a one-time fee (or none at all) would be appropriate and logical.

Expect use of strong language.

Follow the basic rules of lemmy.world and common sense, and try to have fun if possible.

No flamewars or attacking other users, unless they're spineless corporate shills.

Note that not all subscriptions are awful. Supporting your favorite ~~camgirl~~ creator or Lemmy server on Patreon is fine. An airbag with subscription is irl Idiocracy-level dystopian bullshit.

New community rule: Shilling for cunty corporations, their subscriptions and other anti-customer practices may result in a 1-day ban. It's so you can think about what it's like when someone can randomly decide what you can and can't use, based on some arbitrary rules. Oh what, you didn't read this fine print? You should read what you're agreeing to.

It's a bit of a cucumber season, so I thought I'll post something from both sides of the argument.

This video discusses some positives of subscriptions, though specifically in comparison to free services. I think they're forgetting a few things - such as that just because a service is paid, doesn't mean it's inherently better or more private - but there you go. Some points "for".

Yeah, one of the statements "If you're not paying with cash, you're paying with attention, time, and/or privacy" I found to no longer be relevant.

Doesn't matter if you spend thousands whether it be a video card or even a tesla. Telemetry to collect data has become a standard with the normalization of everyone being the product regardless of price tier for lot of services and products.

And for YouTube type services seems even more so with the service requiring being logged into an account so along with payment information it leading to much more account specific data collection. The YouTube workarounds actually do more to try to disassociate usage data than the official paid products do.

Also, for those who feel like reading the video transcript than sitting through 10+ minutes

Oh shit, I never knew anything like a youtube transcription existed. This changes everything. Thanks!

Newpipe with sponsorblock is legitimately better than YouTube premium.

Would you rather see higher quality content with more ads or lower quality content with less ads. Comment that down below.

I'd rather rather see no content and no ads. Or more accurately I refuse to see ads so if there is no way to view the content without ads and data harvesting then I will simply not look at it. Find a new business model if you want me to see your thing.

Of course I'm also not going to pay to remove ads. That is just rewarding people for putting ads on things.
