Maybe because the 8th of May is already a remembrance day.
France: what? It’s a catholic day off. Not catholic anymore but we like holidays.
To be honest it's just a random occurence that this year both fall on the same date.
Ascension is always on a Thursday, and 9th of May is that precise date, so most of the time they are separate days.
I only knew about it when I was working in Luxembourg as it is a public holiday there.
