Pros:
- Active community (477 users / week 531 users / month)
- Actively managed by @[email protected], admin of sopuli.xyz
- Well managed instance
I dont see any con here, but feel free to point out any
To discuss how to grow and manage communities / magazines on Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed and Sublinks

Thank you, subscribed.
The idea was more to discuss which one to pick to become the "default" one to post too, but happy to help
Like Linux distributions, I think the biggest, most popular one will have the best chance at challenging the status status quo, so every subscription matters!
Very true!

Cons:
From @[email protected]
The instance I’m on is defederated from links.hackliberty.org. I’m not certain why, but I looked at it to find it’s a place for conspiracy theories, including ‘9/11 Truth’ stuff, so it’s probably that. There looks to be a bit of indecision about the right instance for a new ‘privacy’ community, so I’m just mentioning this in regard to that.

Cons:
Maybe I'm missing context or misunderstanding something here, but isn't it a little early to say the instance/community aren't being managed? There doesn't even seem to have that much relevant feedback to base anything on, so far.
Furthermore, privacyguides isn't just a known name to me, it's also a well regarded one. I appreciate them having an official community on Lemmy, so that pro carries a certain weight with it.
P.S. thank you for your efforts towards reducing centralization and unnecessary reliance on lemmy.ml.
Hello,
For some additional context:
So indeed, the name is known and that's a pro (I mentioned it in the top comment), but it seems like the instance and the community aren't actively looked after.
Edit: last point: the instance has 7k registered users for 230 active users a month, email verification was optional during registration, seems like people have been using it as a farmbot (registration has since then been disabled).
Thank you, that's a bit of a shame. I see that you pinged Jonah, here's to hoping he'll share his thoughts and perhaps shed some light on the situation.
Let's see how it goes, but from another comment, it seems like they are more focused on their Discourse instance: https://discuss.privacyguides.net/
In that context, I can understand why they wouldn't want to spend too much time on Lemmy
Pinging @[email protected] to see what you think as I see you posted recently there.
Do you think that the instance seeing unmanaged is an issue? I got a DM from one of the mods just now, he told me they review the reports "from time to time". The last mod actions were 3 months ago.
Oh interesting, I didn't know it was mostly unmoderated. I would have preferred to post there, and posts there do get a lot of discussion, but lack of moderation is a problem.
Maybe they would be willing to let some more active users here keep an eye on the community? Otherwise I'll use whichever other privacy community we decide to go with
I have one of the mods on Matrix, I suggested to have you as a mod, let's see what they say
Thanks! Happy to keep an eye on things / help recruit other mods if that's what they'd like to do
Hello,
FYI, I suggested the mod to add other mods such as you on Friday no answer so far.
The discourse thread didn't get any answer either: https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/we-re-giving-lemmy-a-try-welcome-to-privacyguides-lemmy-one-x-post/12734/7
Thank you nonetheless!
Asked them on their Discourse: https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/we-re-giving-lemmy-a-try-welcome-to-privacyguides-lemmy-one-x-post/12734/7
Great post - it's an excellent idea to highlight communities not on .ml or .world as it helps spread the love and the load.
Thanks. As an update, I dm'd the last active mod on !privacyguides, no answer so far.
I might go to their discourse and ask them directly, at least we'll know
Looking at the activity there, they've clearly cut Lemmy loose.
Pinging @[email protected], @[email protected] and @[email protected] as you seem to post quite a lot on this topic, what do you think?
2 months later
Should we consider [email protected] the reference?
4 months later, situation is pretty much the same. Lemmy.one might really disappear overnight, I might do a post about it over there, but we probably don't have a definitive alternative.
@[email protected] you also seem quite active on the topic, what do you think?
Still open to changing up where I post :)
[email protected] has active mods
I just came across [email protected] as well
If [email protected] has active mods, that's probably better.
I just checked the programming.dev one, there were two devs: one admin, and one which hasn't been active for a year
That makes sense, happy to help in any way as needed!
