MODERATORS

So yesterday I shared a news article about a dispute of materials and distribution of the Lakota Language Consortium. I thought it was a recent article, but in fact it was almost two years old, so it was (understandably) removed.

I wondered what happened since, so I found this podcast and transcript from late March of this year, which I hope is recent enough, given there seemed to be a lot of interest.

TL;DR: is that Ray Taken Alive kept his teaching license, Alex Fire Thunder is now the director of LLC (note: not actually an LLC, that’s just the acronym). They maintain their disagreements about who can use the language, and how, while both supporting the survival of the language.

Instead of another round of hot takes for those of us given to such responses, I hope everyone who’s interested can listen to the podcast (with source material - some of Delores Taken Alive’s recordings) and/or check out the transcript for the interesting subject and questions involved.

I was wondering about this situation, thanks for posting an update. I think the podcast did a great job of explaining the complexity of the issue while making sure to leave passing judgement or picking a side to the tribal leaders and stewards of the language
