I'd also like a larger character limit.

As another account stated in this feed, please consider moving to a Firefish server.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've been trying Firefish. I'm not sure it's for me.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My impression of firefish that might resonate with some ...

I would use firefish much more if its UI weren't so bloated. Load times for just about anything can be intolerable. Sometimes, I know what I want to do and just want to do it snappily. Firefish/misskey etc, with all of their features UI sparkles, which I'm rather fond of generally, just get in the way sometimes.

Widgets etc. can be disabled as far as I know. Performance issues I have seen thus far were mostly on the server side. On my phone it is fairly smooth now using the PWA in the browser (Firefox Mobile) and that is on fairly modest hardware (4GB of RAM, Unisoc T606 SoC). On my Odroid N2Plus (only slightly beefier SoC than the phone and as much RAM) it performs fairly okay as well (with regular desktop browser). I will not speak about Firefish on my desktop because I am not being fair then.

Thanks! Also, my experience may be out of date now (a couple of months old mostly).

One of the biggest performance issues is the blur effect in the UI. Disable that from the settings and on my current laptop it goes from "visibly laggy" to "fairly usable, even if not as performant".

Are admins able to set a character limit? :O

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They are, that is why not every Mastodon instance is having the same limits.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

i started on techhub dot social, and they had a 1k character limit, and i recently switched to hachyderm dot io, which has a 500 limit. hachyderm seemed a little more lively and social in the “local” feeds. techhub’s local feed seemed to be a little dry and had a lot of bot activity. but not sure if my experience truly representative, i am relatively new to the fediverse in general. never had any moderation issues with either.

I'm on todon.eu

It has a 1312 character limit, which tells you a lot about the vibe of the instance, if that's what you're into

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

1312 doesn't tell me anything

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

It means ACAB: "all cops are bastards."

It'd be really nice if there was a github page with an overview of all the mastodon instances like the one for lemmy. Is anyone aware of such a resource?

Link to the github page in question for lemmy

One of the other tech instances. Infosec.exchange maybe. I'm on Fosstodon and followed the incident. I was also dinged for tooting in French once, so I opened a second account. Someday I might merge them for simplicity's sake.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It's not the language requirement that is motivating my move (although I don't particularly like it).

Yikes! Thanks for the link.

I didn't notice any issue with Mastodon Social

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Sort of related, but does anyone know if Mastadon servers require others in the server to find other instances before you see feeds from them in the All tab, like with Lemmy?

I'm thinking of getting into Mastadon and that would be a big reason to pick a bigger instance than a smaller one.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It does work that way, but Mastodon and some other microblogging software like Firefish (fka Calckey), Pleroma, etc. can also use relays to populate their federated timelines.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh right, I remember hearing about relays. Is that something the admin of the instance controls?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yup! If the software supports it, instance admins can usually add relays from their control panel.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It works similarly in that regard.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Good to know!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd just recommend switching to Kbin or Firefish tbh

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Kbin and firefish don't quite work the way I like. Moderation is a per instance concern that's not so easy to discern the quality of.

Solarpunk.moe has a wonderfully tight community :) with what you're looking looking for too

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm suspicious of .moe instances as a lot of instances I don't want to associate with have .moe domains. I'll take a look based on your recommendation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh I had no idea! I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I had found the solarpunk one on the 11th of June and forgot I had an account there until a couple weeks ago. I think it's maintained by TakeV, if that would mean anything to you? Local seems to be comprised of lots of queer developers who post funny thoughts and pretty conversational style posts. If you mean not wanting to associate and it's related to nsfw, me too - I want to avoid that entirely as well and so far I haven't come across anything more extensive than I have on Mastodon, that said I may have gone through and blocked the # for the content I want to avoid. I just double checked - it looks like I have no filters set, and I can't explicitly recall seeing nsfw stuff (if that's what the issue you were having was - if it's social other other then I am out of the loop).

I haven't followed many people and I don't post much but it's a small nice community so far.

It's got a couple styles, I've come to like the glitch theme and the general theming of the solarpunk style with planting seeds, shining upon, and recycling lol.

A bunch of instances that were serving up CSAM have .moe domains. Which doesn't really mean that there's any association between .moe and CSAM but it makes me cautious.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Oh yikes, I wasn't aware that's definitely freaky.
