Hello new Lemmy friends!
Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.
The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.
Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.
We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

The Birds Papaya is getting her hair done today and then, that’s it, nothing else is happening. At all. I love this for her and hope it continues. She’s so incredibly vapid and the vocal fry is off the charts. She’s choosing to lean in hard on the skinny editing this week and then tosses in a cellulite pic just to ‘keep it real’. The damage she’s doing to women is incredible. This woman’s entire life is shopping, body-checking, getting her hair done and scrolling her phone. That’s it.
She’s sooooooooo boring. L shipped off to Nana’s I’m sure so she can sit getting her hair fried for the entire day. The most uninteresting person out there, how does she have followers.
Right. Always out spending money and doing nothing important. How is this relatable?
A later story shows L at home having her first swimming lesson and Sarah chose to get her hair done instead of being there for that milestone
Yet she'll post stupid ramblings about treasuring the childhood moments, life speeds by, blah, blah, blah, toss in a teary photo, all for engagement, rather than actually live and experience those things.
The girl ain't right.
And people think she’s mother of the year for some reason 🙄 imagine FaceTiming your kid during their first swim lesson because your hair was more important.
That made me so sad. I'd be so excited to watch that! What a privilege and she throws it away.

I don’t get how people worship this woman who does NOTHING of importance. Goes to Disney, flies to LA or NYC for nothing, goes shopping, gets beauty multiple treatments, hardly spends time with her kids. Wow groundbreaking, I admire her so much 🙄

What absolute trash she is, using the LGBTQIA community to sell products. She does NOTHING for that community, doesn't even comment on the MULTITUDE of issues that community faces as a whole. She thinks she's a hero to "the gays" as she puts it because she puts on her best Rupaul voice to titter with what's their name on their podcast (their name genuinely escapes me right now, but they pretend to be best friends once or twice a year). Only people in the LGBTQIA2S community get to say if someone is an ally, “mother” , icon, etc. You cannot self-appoint yourself. And other white cisgender women don’t get to nominate people for this role either.
Exactly. Thank you!! She's not an icon or an ally. She has done nothing for the community. I'm not sure if June is pride month in Canada but she loves pretending she's from the US and not one mention of it. Allyship is all about using your privilege and platform to uplit and advocate. She says it's because she doesn't want to alienate or whatever bullshit but honestly I don't see too many people getting upset about LGBTQIA2S like in the past. It's not as polarizing as Gaza (Not that a genocide should be polarizing but I digress) so she really doesn't give an Eff. Why should she? It doesn't affect her. She just profits off it and uses the culture and the lexicon for herself. I would hate to think about how she would react if she had a queer child. She's obviously not a safe space, nor does she expose them. We made a very conscious effort to stay in a big city near the neighborhood my husband and i grew up in. We avoided suburban flight because it's so important to us they live urban and exposed.
I took my daughter to her first pride parade this year. She's 14 and it can be pretty crazy down here (over 1 million attendees yearly) so I held off but she has been around queer people all her life and have always discussed allyship and what it means. My daughter came out as Bi at 10 and my friend bought her a bi flag for her room. We discuss Palestine and politics freely in our home. We are vocal and proud of our beliefs. She can keep her money and followers, I'll keep my convictions and education. Tldr: she sucks.

You’re an awesome mom! My partner is pansexual and Indigenous, and I still never just was like “I’m am ally”- I was given that honour by members of both communities after being active in events for years. I love that you are having important discussions in your home ! Similarly, we regularly discuss human rights, consent, trans rights, body autonomy, genocide, advocacy, etc. We wear our pro Pali stuff, pride stuff, and have an awesome circle that supports this.
I can’t imagine having millions of people, (allegedly millions of people) follow me and be OK walking the stage for misogynistic and sexualized magazine edition, and yet not be vocal about genocide, trans rights … literally anything of substance?
Keep supporting your child! It’s obvious that you have a safe space that you have provided, and all homes should be like this. We cannot assume that just because people don’t say anything about something that they are a safe space. It is the reason why it’s so important that everyone is vocal about these things.

There are tons, just tons of people on Insta and Tik that are shitlord hypocritical 'influencers', as well as a huge number of people who use filters or some form or image/video manipulation on themselves and lie about it...
Is this person in particular some specific kind of horrible?

There just are not any other communities, which regularly pop up on my standard feed, which center around exposing/documenting one particular fake ass influencer.
Valid point about the thousands of vapid influencers on all of social media. One of the differences with her is that she’s intentionally curated para-social pretend friendships with her followers by being seemingly vulnerable and humble. She profits off of a movement that claims to value ALL bodies. But then She uses filters to make hers smaller and smoother, and lies about it.
She has lots of other faults that have been listed. But to me, her betrayal of larger bodies and hypocritical bullshit is the big one.
