The official guide from Proton, https://protonvpn.com/support/ios-vpn-setup/, requires the use of "OpenVPN Connect" app.

Some inspiration from this guide: https://surfshark.com/blog/how-to-setup-vpn-on-iphone, tells me that I can possibly setup vpn manually on iOS via:

Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > Click on the VPN tab.

Click on Add VPN Configuration.

. .

However, I will need the following information::

  • Type: IKEv2.

  • Description: Your preferred name of the connection.

  • Server: The hostname of the server.

  • Remote ID: Copy the hostname you put in the Server line.

  • Local ID: Leave it empty.

  • User Authentication: Username.

  • Username: Put in the service credentials,.

  • Password: Put in the service credentials,.

  • Proxy: Off.

Why do you not just use the offical Proton VPN app for iOS?

Just to answer here in the thread also, as answered on reddit:

IKEv2 has been discontinued on iOS for security reasons:

https://protonvpn.com/support/discontinuing-ikev2-openvpn-macos-ios/

You'll have to use an app, whether that is the Proton VPN app, Open VPN app, WireGuard app or something like Passepartout.

The OpenVPN app works with the OpenVPN protocol and thus with the OpenVPN configuration files.

The WireGuard app works with WireGuard configuration files.

Passepartout works with both, OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration files.

I’ve been using the official app without any issue for a while now. Wouldn’t that be easier? Or do you have a specific use case?

I open the proton vpn app, turn on my vpn and set everything up in the app.
