Muting is a Boost feature. It won't show posts from those communities in your feed

Blocking is a Lemmy feature. You won't see blocked communities or posts from those communities.

So generally, they have the same goals, but blocking is server-side and muting is client-side.

What difference will there be if I, for example, mute lemmy.ml and block lemmy.ml?

I suppose when muted, posts from lemmy.ml would not appear in my feed. Same thing when blocked. The only difference will be the visibility of lemmy.ml itself, its posts, and communities. If muted, I could still access them, and when blocked, they would not exist for me. Am I right?

What about comments and private messages? From my experience, when muted, they are still visible , but when blocked, what happens?

Yes!

I can only explain the behavior of muting because is the one I developed for Boost. Muting only affects posts in a feed. If you mute an user, you won't see posts from that user in your feed. It doesn't affect comments or messages.

I think muting means you don't see post/comments from them and if you blocked them they don't see yours either.

Are you sure blocked users don't see my posts? There is nothing about it on the lemmy website:

Actually this is a good question... What's the difference between blocking and muting?

Blocking users keeps their messages from appearing to you. Blocking an instance removes all user and community communications from your views. There might be more

Ok, but what about muting? Is it boost specific feature? I don't see it on the official lemmy website.

It seems if you block an instance, folks from that instance can still post in other federated servers and be seen.

I don't see an option for 'muting' on the midwest.social instance for individual users or other instances.

I am guessing it's Boost or instance specific, where the application would sort back the output and selectively render replies. I don't know.
