A schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted.

Nobuhiko Obayashi has made many wonderful(ly weird) movies, but this is definitely his magnum opus. Hausu is a pure visual effects delight. A few more stills..

I love this movie, though honestly the first half is a long, boring set of sunshiney schoolgirl fluff. I guess it contrasts with all the weirdness that happens when they finally arrive at the house, but it does take quite a while to get to the good part.

If you like this, try the Jodorowski film Holy Mountain for even more of a trip.

Holy Mountain is brilliant! I saw it in the theatre last year for its 50th anniversary rerelease. 😵‍💫🍿

It's a batshit movie. The first time I watched it the subtitles desynced and slowly got more and more out out of sync as the film went on. We only realised about half way through - somehow it didn't make the film less understandable.

was dropping acid once & figured i'd been putting off watching this one for all too long. one of the best decisions i've ever made & it's not even particularly close.

Mandom commercial, by the same director.
