I've been looking for something to replace Trello, mostly for personal use between me and my partner. We both have our own boards as well as a couple shared ones we use for planning trips/etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a kanban/trello-like software?

I've been using Obsidian w/ the obsidian-kanban plugin lately and it is alright, but obviously not as easy to share between two people and more limited compared to some of the features trello has.

Two options I'm trying out now:

  • Planka - seems like it might be alright, but haven't used it enough yet. Trello import option is one-board-at-a-time.
  • Vikunja - extremely slow for some reason and the auto-save feature kept causing me to lose what I typed

Thanks! I added this one to my list to try too. I'm pretty sure I saw a screenshot of it before and thought it looked too simple/basic. That's not a bad thing though, and the docs do sound promising

I have used Kanboard for a few years or so now. You can install themes and other plugins. But besides that, Kanboard are truly advanced piece of tool. It is packed with useful features (and not useful, such as the time tracker (at least for me)).

Tips: when you have added some tasks and want a more compact view, press S on the keyboard. Press the key again to toggle back.

I didn't know it's from the same author as miniflux! I have to try this out now.

I didn't either until you mentioned it, another reason to move it up the list for me too.

Do you have any concerns with it being in "maintenance mode"? It looks like it still gets regular releases, but are there any major features you'd like to see added?

Also, that's a lot more plugins than I was expecting!

There are not ading new features but it's complete and well maintained. I have been using it for years and it's the best thing I could find. There are similar tools but the others are not powerfull enough for project managing.

Maybe Kanboard?

But I personally use Nextcloud Deck which works really well if you are running Nextcloud anyways. It also has a nice dedicated Android app on F-Droid.

Thanks for the Nextcloud Deck mention. I didn't even think about looking for a plugin there, but I do already use nextcloud so I'll give it a try.

I installed it and the first thing I noticed is the cards kind of blend in with the background, is this what it looks like for you too?

Hmm, that looks like an issue with the dark theme. You can probably fix that with some custom css or better report it on their repo and maybe submit a fix.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Good idea, it does look fine in light mode. Dark mode w/ high contrast looks fine too. I'll probably open an issue if I don't find one already there. Either way I'll try it out, thanks

@johntash @selfhosted I self host https://wekan.github.io/ and it works very nicely. I haven't tried to integrate it into any other software though so if that's your goal, you may want to look elsewhere

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't really need to integrate it with anything other than maybe importing from trello one-time, and even then that's not a huge requirement for now.

Someone else recommended wekan too, I'll add it to my list

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

@johntash I had a quick look and migrating from Trello seems to be supported - https://github.com/wekan/wekan/wiki/Migrating-from-Trello

I have previously used WeKan, it is alright if you're willing to have software that uses Mongo (oof) and Meteor (big oof) in your lab.

I have heard good things about Focalboard (which is apparently part of/owned by Mattermost now!?), but haven't used it myself. I will be giving it a go at some point probably, eventually.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I had a pretty good experience with the focalboard desktop app

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks! I'll add it to my list. I'm not already using mongo or meteor and would rather prefer something using mysql/postgres since I already have those.

Focalboard does look interesting, I'm downloading the desktop app now to try it that way. I remember liking mattermost when it first started, but haven't really used it much since then! The dual license of mattermost/focalboard is kinda weird, but I don't think it'd affect me at all.

Been rocking Vikunja for over a year. One of the few items used by everyone in the house.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I self host Mattermost it's a Slack+Trello alternative. But they do also have just the Trello alternative if you don't want the Slack functionally it's called Focalboard

Someone recommended https://plane.so in another thread, I tried it out and it looks promising. I haven't tried to self host it yet tho, and trello import isn't available yet: https://github.com/makeplane/plane/issues/1251
