Side of the road pretty common to see them

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not in Berlin. I see them sometimes, but not often enough. I want one now ^^

Out of curiosity, what do you think Berlin's secret is in this regard? Like, do people naturally not litter e-waste, or are there easier recycling options, import restrictions, or enforced litter laws?

Assuming that you're living in the US I think the secret is that disposable vapes aren't as abundant in Germany yet.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah, I'm hoping to get at why. Drop-shipped disposables took over Juul's market in the US and then grew it by about 600%. It was so dramatic (in a business sense) that it's caused ripples in US and UK trade policy, and I just assumed that blitz was happening everywhere.

It could also be that Berliners are apparently collecting them 😂

Jelly doughnuts?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Lots of states made flavored reusable vapes illegal, but flavored disposables are legal. Yes, it is as stupid as it sounds.

i would guess near night clubs and the like… they’re more likely to use them, and drunk people are more likely to toss them willy nilly…

Most that I've found have been on the ground near bus stops.

Is this for your Meshtastic board (from your other post)? If so, that's a great up-cycle and should work well with the onboard charging.

I have a few I've saved for similar purpose, but I'm not sure about shipping them.

Like someone else said maybe check with vape shops / dispensaries in your area to see if they collect them for recycling.

Yes exactly that's what I am trying to do. I just found a 3.7v battery in an ancient cellphone of mine, maybe that'll work as well.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

As long as it'll still accept a charge and isn't a spicy pillow, yeah, absolutely. I've never had great luck soldering onto those little pads but it's certainly doable (though I'll admit my soldering skills aren't the greatest).

I've been wanting to play with Meshtastic for a while and was looking at using something like the LilyGo T-Deck with its blackberry-like keyboard to make cool little off-grid messengers for camping/hiking trips.

Honestly just get a heltec v3 from aliexpress, it's only like 12€.

The board works with the cellphone battery, even with just holding the wires to the contacts ^^

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, yeah, I just like the T-Deck form factor. Was going to use Meshtastic as the base but the ESP32 itself would be the messenger (e.g. wouldn't need the phone).

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's cool, will you post your setup in the meshtastic community?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If it ever happens, absolutely :)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Can uh .. can y'all help a lazy man out with a link to this community?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Some cannabis dispensaries collect old/dead ones to recycle.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh that's a good idea, I think supermarkets also collect batteries in general to recycle, maybe there I can find empty vapes.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

I took a peek in a recycling bin last time I was at Target and saw a handful of vapes in there, this would be a good place to start.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

some head shops have return bins for recycling

Is there a particular reason that an 18650 or 21700 would suit your use case less?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah I don't have one around ^^

Actually though that's not true, last night I found an old device of me that I could harvest a 18650 battery from.

On the ground, near bus stops, parking lots, gas stations, anywhere people use them.
