Tell everyone about Lemmy and host an AMA here, maybe? Using Lemmy as a billboard for Reddit is kind of insulting.

I agree with the sentiment, but this is also a silly demand. Of course they do their ama where they have the most reach, and possibly share the info in smaller places such as this.

They can do whatever they want on Reddit, TBH. However, pointing Lemmy users to Reddit is a bad move in a number of ways. I won't be touching Reddit for this, as an example.

Using Lemmy as a place to shit out advertising for a site that gives zero fucks about selling data to Google kinda rubs me wrong, especially since this AMA is just thinly veiled marketing.... for a privacy app.

While "having the most reach" is a good argument for a few reasons, it doesn't negate how Lemmy was used in this case.

Edit: Don't let my sentiment get in the way of yours. I have nothing wrong with ProtonMail or what its goals are. However, I will get a little defensive of Lemmy and why many people are here to begin with.

I loged in to my account for the first time in over a year, to ask them about starting their own Fediverse instances for public communications. Specifically Mastodon and Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago

They are moderately active on Mastodon, I saw them answering questions. So if you want to ask something, that could be a better option that is also not limited to a single AMA session.

I'd rather ask here: when is proton mail going to get rid of the google dependency?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They said something along the lines of it requiring to develop two separate apps and they don't have the resources for that atm

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That doesn't sound right at all. Don't they just need to change who they're getting notifications from?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

They mentioned that other providers aren't reliable enough and therefore would need to use that live notification method. I hope I understood correctly (re: the 2nd part of the sentence)

An alternative is https://protonmail.uservoice.com and vote on what features you want Proton to work on.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you, I didn't know this existed.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

You are most welcome.

The fact that the AMA is happening on Reddit is so incredibly stupid, there is literally no reason to use this pile of garbage in 2024. Fuck spez

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

Like it or not, it still has a larger user base.

I don't wanna log into Reddit just to ask this but if you're inclined: how's things going with Standard Notes since they bought it? I haven't seen any change or decline in the app experience since Proton bought it so thanks so far (I'm also using Protonmail).

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

There was only one question regarding Standard Notes:

Is there an ETA for the Standard Notes implementation for Proton subscriber?

And the rep from ProtonMail replies:

Actually we're interested in the community feedback here. There was a lot of pent up demand for Proton Docs so we prioritized getting that out first and are now focused on further improving Proton Docs. Given the choice between putting resources between further improving Proton Docs or integrating Standard Notes with Proton Accounts, it's not exactly clear what is more valuable to the community. So unfortunately I don't have an answer here as we haven't internally decided yet either, but we will take on community feedback as we work for you. -Andy

The were several replies of people asking for them to prioritize integration, while a couple wanted them to focus on Docs.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cheers thank you for that. My main hope is that they don't fuck Standard Notes up somehow, it's a wonderful editor and I've been a paying supporter of it since very early on.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's solid. I don't love the electron app but understand why that choice was made.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

And too the main dev is really passionate about the project and has done awesome things with it. It feels like he landed in a good place and is getting opportunities for healthy growth out of the deal.

"On your first question, we are in touch with the rclone dev working on Proton Drive integration and they have our API specs and documentation, and we're available to answer any questions that they might have"

Nice, I hope rclone integrates with them soon

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They are, but it's in beta.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Have you noticed any breaking issues? If you tried it yourself ofc

"We might have one more product coming in 2024. 2025 is further out so it is harder to anticipate, but after a period of many product releases, we generally enter a more "quiet" period where we are focusing more on existing products. "
