But still can't be packaged for Debian :-(

Just use containers. Any Debian package would be years out of date and doing updates wouldn't be a challenge to say the least. Meanwhile with containers I can easily update the version.

What? Containers are the easy route. There isn't anything easier that I know of. You just deploy it and be done.
