I don't think that the otter minds being called thicc.

Who was the apology for exactly?

[–] [email protected] 127 points 1 month ago (11 children)

Apology was for people offended by an aquarium using teen slang to connect with today’s youth.

[–] [email protected] 45 points 1 month ago

Truly a tragedy.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Teen slang? Thicc has been around online since around 2010, and IRL for even longer. That means anyone who was a teen when it became popularized is pushing 30 now.

"Digital blackface?" Get a fucking grip

[–] [email protected] 53 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

The term, originally spelled "thick," dates back to the 90s and was used in black culture in reference to women, Dictionary.com says.

Can we stop this "black culture" bull shit too? At this point, it's just American culture. Why are we segregatting a questionably sexist term now?

Stop categorizing every little thing as "black" or "white". An American started the term for a specific purpose, and Americans still use it today with a broader application.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

Fucking right? I grew up in schools where urban vernacular was very popular, so it's interwoven into my casual speech. But SJW's would have you believe I'm culturally appropriating lingo because of the color of my skin, despite the fact that it's part of my upbringing. So much of modern anti-racism is just moar racism.

[–] Jolteon 13 points 1 month ago

Honestly, it's not even sexist anymore. I've seen it used to refer to men almost as often as women.

[–] Honytawk 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How about "thick" and "thicc" being 2 separate terms and having different origins?

Why should they relate? I've only ever heard "thicc" being used on the internet.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

how would you be able to tell the difference in spoken language?

Objectively no reason for that apology.

They need to apologize for apologizing.

Whatever dipshits demanded they apologize need to apologize for making the internet a worse place.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They definitely should've put more thought into it before typing "internetism", but still no reason for an apology.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

i think saying internetism is a reason for apology

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago

"We apologize for the apology. Those responsible for demanding it have been sacked."

Why would they apologize for that? Were people clutching their pearls?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago (9 children)

Some people thought the aquarium was appropriating AAVE

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago

How dare they express the joy that was in their hearts!

I've begun assuming any culture war rage bait bullshit is just Russian troll farms or their copycats. They poisoned the well on purpose, so I've decided to let them drink it instead. It isn't always going to be accurate, but it's great for my mental health.

[–] [email protected] 53 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's funny, don't apologise

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

Funny isn't allowed with the perpetually outraged crowd

[–] [email protected] 44 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I thought "thicc" is almost a compliment nowadays.

It does not equal "obese", and is more like having thick hips and/or generally being a bit more puffy and cuddly. Which is nice, and Internet appreciates it!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

Not just thicc, even straight up saying "you have a fat ass" has approached compliment territory.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 1 month ago (5 children)

should've doubled down on it.

make the fat people angry, they can't catch up to you, say whatever you want to them.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Probably upset someone with influence.

I remember this art studio I went to posted pictures of a nude statue. And Facebook Karen's lost their shit because their precious Timmy can't see a stone tit.

They took it down and apologized, because Facebook Karen's make up a bunch of their profits.

In their defence, Abby is kind of thicc.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 month ago

But is the otter, in fact, a chonk?

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago

I laughed and accept that most humor offends someone. I'm sure the offended would get a laugh out of something that I wouldn't like so I don't care if they are offended now.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago

But Abby is cute and also is thicc.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

Did DougDoug do this? Sounds like DougDoug did this.

It's otter awareness week, so I guess it's working.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

somehow find it hard to believe they were really offended. it is just another form of satisfying the "being right on the internet" addiction.

what they don't realize is there is always someone "holier than thou". you can for instance easily take "comparing Black women to animals" and give it a completely pointless animal rights twist (its not the animal rights that is pointless it is the twist, saying in case someone tries to cancel me) and ask this person to apologise. it is an endless game.
