Please also check out vegantheoryclub.org for a great set of well-run communities for vegan news, cooking, gardening, and art. It is not federated with LW, but it is a nice, cozy, all-in-one space for vegans.

We ask that the you have an understanding on what veganism is before engaging in this community.

Welcome

Welcome to c/[email protected]. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • pictures of text require alt-text;
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

I cry when people pluralize deer as "deers".

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

I mean, it’s not really used but it is an acceptable plural form.

People cry when a deer gets hit? I hope it's over their wrecked vehicle and not over an animal that is hunted to control its population.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sure we totally have the right to end their lives. You bet.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I really fear what takes you have about population control.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The pet population is controlled in this exact manner. Do you fear it in that context?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do you hunt pets or hit them with your car to control their population?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nope. I also don't hunt nor did it ever occur to me to control the deer population by intentionally hitting them with my car. I'm sure there are people who have intentionally hit deer but unlikely with any sort of population control mindset.

The fun part is I totally understand why this seems like a logical connection for you but I would be banned for saying it and you wouldn't believe me anyway.

Actually, you're going to be banned for using a vegan community to defend animal murder for sport and then pretend that it's because you give an inkling of a shit about ecology (although even taking that at face value, what you're arguing for is already beyond entitled as fuck, namely you expect to build roads through their habitat and then kill them en masse so they don't disturb you on your drive).

Your existing stupid shit can stay, though, because it's comically representative of how down bad hunters are to go killing animals and create ad hoc justifications for it.

i've read your name as [email protected] and i thought it was appropriate. Well chosen.

than i've read it correctly as Clent and even if you were unaware of all this until you've read this: my apologies

Cool story. Good job working the crowd.

Clearly none of you have ever hit a deer with a car or known anyone that has. Those accidents can cause serious injuries.

But you are also a humorless bunch which I find extremely humorous.
