MODERATORS

I was wondering why the Reddit deals were no longer being shown here, especially the $1300 Dell PC with RTX3080+7700x.

It turns that bot was banned. I don't think there's any explanation available, guess bots are just not welcome in this instance?

Anyway, it was a great run, but guess Reddit couldn't be replaced in the end.

The bot has been unbanned.

For some context as to why, there was something that was reported as spam (can't remember the exact thing off the top of my head), and it looked like the community was unmoderated, with only the bot contributing, so it was banned.

With the addition of the extra mods, etc, the bot should be fine! Sorry about that!

Thank you! The bot will be the main poster of this sub, as manual entries will be rather difficult with timing of deals. There shouldn't be many human posts. Thank you for the swift-reversal! :)

Thank you for the explanation and swift reversal. I will work with the mods to implement a blacklist system.

So I've been a little absent the past few months (haven't even logged in), and I'll be honest, I never even saw that we had gotten a bot. It's great that we had one, but this community is pretty small to begin with. Hopefully the community is able to get the bot back in the sub

According to the modlog, the bot was banned for ads. I guess the bot reposted something from the Reddit bapcsales sub that sounded too much like an ad. I can understand the reasoning, and it's likely someone reported seeing too much sales stuff in the main feed.

Good catch on noticing it, maybe petition an admin like @[email protected] to restore it or weigh in, potentially.

wtf.. it's mostly the only way I can see this sub works without people organically post here

Mods and admins need to feel that rush of power of hitting the ban button. Doesn't matter if it destroys the platform. Look at the mod log, it's disgusting.

The joy of lemmy is you can move instances and have different admins, if thats how you feel. You can even host one yourself

Did the repost bot carry an actual ad? I know - don't blame the messenger - but I'm sure I saw one the other week.

I think it might be the Windows licenses that felt like an ad. It was removed from reddit I think so I can't confirm.

If the bot is unbanned, it should be easy to make a whitelist of domains, but even then there could things falling through the cracks (like sketchy 3rd party Amazon/Newegg/Walmart stuff). A whitelist would also not be inclusive of small platforms (like the Staples resale website where people can get legit workstations for 200), and would take a lot of effort to build if we include direct sellers (Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Apple, etc).

Blacklist might be better, but it will not account for new domains where most of the ads/scam happen. So it would be high maintenance.

So not sure what's the best that can done.
