Retro publisher Limited Run Games is bringing back BattleTanx and its sequel, BattleTanx: Global Assault, to the Nintendo 64 console. Originally released in the USA, these games are known for their over-the-top action and destruction which captured a cult following when they hit shelves.

  • Games Set to be Rereleased: Both versions of BattleTanx will see pre-orders starting on November 22nd until December 22nd with an expected release date in August 2025. The sequels and original modes, including deathmatches and capture the flag, will also be supported.

  • Preserved Features: As part of Limited Run Games' signature style, the games retain support for the Rumble Pak and Memory Pak, ensuring an authentic N64 experience.

Do you remember playing BattleTanx? What do you think about its return to the market?

I actually tried to purchase this IP from its current owner (at the time about 8 or so years ago), who IIRC used to be a CFO or some other financial executive at 3DO. He was a nice guy, but we didn't agree on the value of the IP.

I think its really strange that they are only re-releasing on exactly the same platform. I can only imagine this means all the source code is completely lost, and the IP owner has no interest in selling or something.

I think a remaster with online multiplayer could be a lot of fun. Like the arcade version of World of Tanks.

Another case for emulation as preservation. The hardware to play the games will eventually be lost.

Is love to hear more about the negotiation process.

I played this a lot with my best friend growing up. I have fading memories of playing this all night during sleepovers.

It’s really cool to see this.

The ads for this game on TV were hilarious. I remember playing this all the time. Wonder why they are releasing now? They gonna pull a battlezone and make a new game?

Could be because the Analogue 3D comes out soon which might increase the N64 player base.

Oh never heard of it. I didn't know people still use those things. I'd be too afraid it will break.

I still remember the cheat codes. I had so much fun playing GA with my friends. Time sure does fly.

Must capture the enemy Queenlord!

Just put it on the switch and/or steam! My old group of friends that played it would so go for it again, it would be a blast!

I remember the first game having janky controls and being generally unfun.

I also remember Global Assault basically fixing every problem I had with the first game and being an absolute blast to play.

BattleTanx is extremely naff, but I always have a good time with it. I grew up with the PlayStation version, which runs ridiculously slowly; N64, on the other hand, feels a bit too fast!
