That's it? Made it sound like a damn season with all this build up.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It feels like Adam Silver blew his load with the Sterling ruling and has just been Charmin soft ever since

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Friggin' absolutely right. He's been coasting ever since

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 year ago (2 children)

@whoopThereItIs Less than what I expected, yeah, But one cool thing, though, is that this is the first time I find out about NBA breaking news through Lemmy (and also while following and commenting on this magazine, or whatever it's called, from my Mastodon account).

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Agreed, that is VERY cool!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Same here. I've had to revert to checking a few different sites since I got off reddit to make sure I didn't miss anything important. Lemmy came through on this one!!!

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 year ago

This is actually huge because he will automatically not be eligible for MVP and All-NBA awards.

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that goes into effect July 1, a player must appear in 65 games (with limited exceptions) to be eligible for awards

...That's it? Might as well have announced it during the Finals, this is a nothing burger. DeAndre Ayton got suspended 25 games for failing a drug test. Ja has flashed a gun twice and got the same amount of games suspended.

Might be the only video game cover he gets on at this rate.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I get that everyone expected more, but 25 games seems plenty to me.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

The first suspension was 8 games so the repeat offense being 3x the penalty seems reasonable. Another poster mentioned that it also makes him ineligible for a lot of end of year awards. I Silver mentioning that they found additional information had everyone thinking the new stuff was worse and worth a bigger suspension.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's almost 1/3 of the games. "Conduct detrimental to the league" is a bit less set in stone than failing a drug test or something. I don't know what people expected, there is a player's union that the NBA has to think about. They don't want the union disputing their decision and turning it into more of a circus. Not sure what people were expecting.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

People just hate Ja at this point, it's less about realistic expectations and more about a punishment fetish.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I agree. Missing 25 games as a professional player while your team either gels or struggles without you would be extremely difficult. If this isn't a wakeup call then 35 or 45 games wouldn't be either.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Did think it was pretty light, but given that it takes him out of a number awards it makes sense

And I'm sure he's on a much shorter leash in the event he doesn't learn from his mistake

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

25 games is a joke.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This seems super light given the tease from Silver

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Ya everyone was thinking it was gonna be a half season even a whole

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Was expecting more like 50+

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Me too. This is pretty underwhelming

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Well that's underwhelming after Silver teased it potentially overshadowing the finals.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

The media really got us hyped up with Silver's comments. I think if he didn't make that statement during the finals, then this would seem like a decent suspension. Everybody kind of went wild with the speculation about the Pacers "laser pointer" incident, etc. I hope they release the details about the plan he has to follow to be reinstated.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Man… Silver seems like such a soft commish. This isn’t much of a deterrence.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Would have thought he'd get more than 25 games but this is still a big blow for the Grizzlies.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Drop in the bucket but he's still set to loose about $7M in pay.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wonder if it's because this will make him still relevant for All-Star weekend.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

He probably will flash another gun right before all star break

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

if he does it again we know he will claim its a toy gun.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe they will suspend him for 25 more games then. lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What a joke, would even be better if the suspension included pre season games :D

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

it includes time served and games he couldve played in his backyard.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

HAHAHAHA what the hell, they teased it like it would be a whole season

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

100%, this dude was straight up gassing up the suspension, reminding everyone every game that they didn't want to reveal the suspension to take away from the finals.

In the end it's 25 games. At least it's not retroactively applied like the last suspension?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess Silver was right to delay it, we would've been talking about his soft ass during the finals instead LOL

Lmao, Adam Silver is kitten soft.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Absolute joke, Adam Silver yet again showing his lack of backbone.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

He is coasting on the Donald Sterling ban and now his softness is catching up to him.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I think that's a decent amount because it excludes him from being in MVP or All-NBA talks. I think if/when Ja acts up again after this it'll be the full season off.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

That's so much less than I expected. I was sure it'd be like at least 41 games

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Yeah, that'll show 'em! /s

In all seriousness I doubt this teaches Ja anything. 25 games isn't going to send much of a message.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Exactly, Ja has to want to make a change and his behavior so far just shows he wants to live a different lifestyle and act a certain way that is not going to end well for him. Until he wants to make that change, he is going to keep doing the same things.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Missing a quarter of the season and eligibility for awards, totaling millions of dollars in losses isn't going to send a message?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think it'll have a larger impact than we feel like it will. Ja is letting down his coaches, teammates, and the fans who want to see him ball. I get it already happened once and didn't seem to do much, but this is for more games and last time the Grizzlies basically had the post season on lock. We won't see Ja playing with any new pieces on the team until a third of the way into the season.

Hopefully for his sake, this was enough of a wake-up call to make real changes in his life. I'm not a Grizzlies fan, but love watching Ja play.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

A decision that I understand from the NBA.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

That's so much less than I expected. I was sure it'd be like at least 41 games

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Seems like nothing to me with the amount of games players sit out these days through load management all things considered.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I thought a season long ban was the minimum. Shoot, nfl hands out season long bans like candy.

Honestly this is really soft.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Should have been an entire season, with him reading the "response" released by "Ja Morant" on TNT before the opening game.

This is pathetic and embarrassing.

nice to see the sensible and balanced takes made it over to Lemmy /s
