Fuck Subscriptions

Naming and shaming all "recurring spending models" where a one-time fee (or none at all) would be appropriate and logical.

Expect use of strong language.

Follow the basic rules of lemmy.world and common sense, and try to have fun if possible.

No flamewars or attacking other users, unless they're spineless corporate shills.

Note that not all subscriptions are awful. Supporting your favorite ~~camgirl~~ creator or Lemmy server on Patreon is fine. An airbag with subscription is irl Idiocracy-level dystopian bullshit.

New community rule: Shilling for cunty corporations, their subscriptions and other anti-customer practices may result in a 1-day ban. It's so you can think about what it's like when someone can randomly decide what you can and can't use, based on some arbitrary rules. Oh what, you didn't read this fine print? You should read what you're agreeing to.

"Look it up on Netflix" is the phrase everybody's heard, how do you deal with that?

I've done a mixture of different approaches, either by getting the film somewhere else (legally, of course) or just saying I don't use X service.

“Thanks for the recommendation”

And then proceed to look it up wherever I use (sonarr etc). No point bashing someone for using netflix / sub services.

Yeah, I don't bash them or anything, their choice to use a subscription service. It works for a lot of people. If it's someone I'm pretty close to, I can turn a Netflix or a Spotify recommendation into a bit of a joke.

I look it up on a pirate site instead.

it's kinda easy for me because i live in a less developed area so things (including tech) are very slowly coming here, most people still see little to no value in digital goods let alone subscription lol.

You can check "JustWatch" or similar pages in case is somewhere else. If not...well you already know which is the only option apart from subscribing, piracy.

I mean for people that don't want to deal with piracy they can take note of the show/movie and when they have plenty of content pending to watch sub for a month or two and watch it.

Most of the time buying the content itself is not worth it, I mean I guess you can sell it back if is a bluray or similar but....

I miss when most people had a stack of DVDs or games.

I mean my personal issue with it is that a lot of content is not that good to be like I will rewatch that and wanting a copy. Like buying a tv show season just to find out is not your thing... sucks even if you still can sell it again.

For some stuff I would be tempted to buying a bluray or so but yeah not like the old days when it was the only way.

That's a huge benefit of digital content: you can just delete the file and move on, or change the channel.

Buying a few seasons of a show you didn't like and then having the boxsets laying around sucked.

I don't miss a stack of stuff, digital stuff is good (it's all just the same data anyway).

But subscriptions, rentals and other crap, nah. If I like something, I want to archive it for future use. Heck even if I don't like something I wanna have the option.

"I don't have Netflix"

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks, but I'm not a fan of paying monthly for a service that's so crap I'd maybe use it once a year.

I don't have Netflix, I'll just sail the seas to get it. Do you want to know how to do it? I could teach you.
