Dunking on Tankies from a leftist perspective.

A tankie is someone who defends/supports authoritarian or even totalitarian regimes who call themselves "socialist". The term originated from people supporting the 1956 invasion of Hungary by the Soviet Union. Nowadays they are just terminally online, denying genocides, and falling for totalitarian propaganda and calling such regimes "true democracies". remember to censor usernames when necessary.

Please be sure to obscure usernames on posts to prevent doxxing.

What's most annoying about this is Dessalines acting as if Muslims are a monolith (which itself is lowkey racist and dehumanizing to treat entire demographics as monoliths) and as if dictators speak for their people. Have they never considered the possibility that Muslim countries haven't denounced the genocide because their leaders have material incentives to deny it? I mean lord knows the US has officially denied genocides for the sake of geopolitical self-interest.

Plus, we have extensive satellite imagery of these concentration camps. This site shows details on almost 400 concentration camps, all clearly visible as prison-like facilities. I just clicked a random one and got this:

Man, I'm starting to think this platform ain't for me. Lots of unhinged folks here.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Same. Authoritarian propaganda from the CCP and Kremlin nonstop.

lemm.ee has a fairly open federation policy, no? That's probably a factor. I don't see nearly that much.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Seems many instances still federate with lemmy.ml which is a major part of the problem.

I haven't had much issue with lemmy.ml tbh but I'm sure if I went looking I'd find something.

They delete comments in critical of the CCP. A couple days ago I corrected someone from there who was lying about something to make the US look bad. A comment said "per the CDC the rate in the US is X" and they misquoted and said it's ten times as high.

So I said "no it's x, look at the comment again." They deleted my comment and left the lie. They also deleted my follow up asking why it was deleted, as well as a bunch of other comments in the thread.

There's heavy censorship on lemmy.ml in favor of the CCP, I'd be surprised if they're not running it directly.

Damn, what was their rationale in the modlog?

I didn't know I could check

Unfortunately that’s just the nature of the internet.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

There's unhinged folks everywhere. Just stay clear of their instances.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Early on, I think lemmy was dominated by unhinged people, because they used it as a refuge when they got banned from reddit for being too unhinged. But as the rest of us normies migrated over because of the API fuckery, the unhinged people are once again in the minority. I see tankies get consistently downvoted into oblivion nowadays, which is a good sign in my book.

You can block communities you don't like, that's just the nature of an open communities. Everyone will be one here.

Obviously if you feel strongly enough, feel free to leave, but no platforms are perfect. I think its better to have these views expressed our in the open where people can comment on it. Even if the poster is too far gone to have their mind changed, anyone who stumbles upon these opinions gets a lot more context around them and can hopefully makes a more informed decision about them. Its actually a lot safer this way.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Ultimately, I agree with less censored stances which is why I picked this instance. I just don't think it's good for my mental health to engage in the political banter. I did start blocking some instances, maybe that will help. Thanks for the insight!

Is he a lemmy developer or lemmy.ml admin Big difference there

A lot of tankies are just arguing "noooo, my """communist""" country can't be doing something wrong!!!"

But some are making the genuine argument that these are "just" internment camps and so its not actually a genocide. Which is honestly a fair argument. We don't tend to claim that the US internment of the Japnese during WW2 was genocide. Just horrible and racist.

Although the argument he uses about Islamic countries not caring is bullshit, because 1 those countries commit their own atrocities against their civilians so they're nit exactly running on morality. And 2 they get a lot of support from China so its in there best interest to not piss them off.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

You can definitely make the argument it is genocide if you have to erase your culture and supplement it with the one of the state.

Having level-headed social opinions is not a requirement for being a good software dev. We need to stop judging these people for having opinions that have absolutely nothing to do with their purpose.

These people are better than you.

Get fucked.

Sincerely,

Notch, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, John Carmack, Hans Reiser and every other programmer who puts their code in front of your feelings.

These people are better than you

Being willing to code as a hobby is not something I would consider makes someone "better than me."

lmao. defending a tankie and a nazi in the same comment, that's a new one
