I frequently find this, for some reason kbin.social comments aren't federating properly. When they reply to my comment thread I am unable to reply to them, and when I log into kbin.social directly and post there my comment doesn't show up on lemm.ee ~~for some time~~ at all.

Edit: A good fix is to apply a language to your comment, eg English. This should allow your comment to post. However it seems like there is still some issue with comments federating across after that - your comment might appear on kbin, but you might not get their replies again.

It's a difficult one. There are ongoing federation issues just about everywhere even within Lemmy and Kbin themselves, so once we get to talking cross-compatibility the problem appears to be even worse.

It has got drastically better since I first joined, so there are clearly investigations underway, but there's still a fair way to go until it's totally reliable.

That said, just to clarify, when you say you're "unable to reply to them" do you mean because their comment doesn't show up on your side, or because you get some kind of error or other weird behaviour when you try to reply?

That said, just to clarify, when you say you’re “unable to reply to them” do you mean because their comment doesn’t show up on your side, or because you get some kind of error or other weird behaviour when you try to reply?

Their comment is there (at least some of them are) but I cannot reply. My comment doesn't enter in, I just get a spinning wheel, with the text box effectively switched to Preview mode. I don't think it even times out, it just keeps spinning until I close the page or hit Cancel.

If I then log in directly to kbin I can reply to them there (and I also sometimes see other kbin comments that aren't on lemm.ee), however back at lemm.ee my new comment isn't there. I haven't gone back to check any of these replies later, I imagine they show up on lemm.ee eventually, but have no idea how long that takes.

Next time the spinny wheel thing happens, try selecting a comment language from the dropdown. I've noticed that sometimes (especially when replying to an external thing from Kbin or Mastodon, but also sometimes from Lemmy so god knows) it won't let me post without explicitly setting the language.

Very much a workaround rather than a fix but it might be easier for you than logging over. Assuming it works, of course, and your problem isn't something totally different!

Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a go next time I come across the issue, then update here.

Eyup, the language thing worked!

However I don't think that's the whole story. My kbin reply from 2 days ago still isn't on lemm.ee, my mentions from kbin didn't alert me in lemm.ee, and while I was able to use the language setting to post a reply, and that reply appeared on kbin, my subsequent reply from kbin did not come back to lemm.ee.

So while you might be able to get your post out, you probably won't know if they reply to you.

It kind of feels like we're giving them our federated content, but they're not reliably giving us theirs. However our admin is on it!

Yeah that checks out. Like I said before the federation issues are definitely still a thing and it does seem to be worse when you're trying to post cross-platform. Honestly not sure if mentions are even supposed to work, I know for example on Lemmy I can't DM a Kbin user (even though it looks like we can, but tested with my husband's Kbin account and apparently DMs to them just disappear into the ether? 🤷‍♀️) so it's possible we also can't mention each other. I have no idea though, just guesses!

I definitely do not envy the devs on either side with all of this work still to do to get both softwares stable, but especially feel for Ernest! Kbin was so new when the influx started, I can't even imagine the stress. Think I read that he has a lot of contributors helping out now though so at least it's not just him on his own trying to keep all the plates spinning.

We'll get there, I'm sure!

When they reply to my comment thread I am unable to reply to them

AFAIK this is due to most (or all?) kbin users limiting what language you're allowed to reply in. Try setting your comment language to "English", then it should go through (Edit: I see you already got this advice from @thegiddystitcher as well).

when I log into kbin.social directly and post there my comment doesn’t show up on lemm.ee for some time.

Not much we can do about this - your comment shows up on lemm.ee as soon as kbin.social sends it over.

Thanks. @[email protected] suggested the same about languages, I'll try that next time and update this post with the result for future users.

By the way, do you remember any specific comment where this occured? I would love to do some testing if you can link a comment like this.

I've just tried to do a mention to myself from my kbin to the comments. That should give me a lemm.ee link to the threads.

In the meantime, I did dig up this one though:

Here I was able to reply to the same comment the kbin user did, as well as in other places on this post, with my lemm.ee account. However I could not reply to the kbin comment linked. I replied to him in kbin, however if you click the federated link on his comment it only displays that comment alone - kbin doesn't have context nor does it display replies to individual comments. In the full comments my reply is there though, along with my lemm.ee replies.

It also looks like my previous kbin reply has not federated into lemm.ee, after more than 2 days. My guess is the mentions won't work, either - they haven't come in yet in the last 15 min. I was able to post just now by applying the English language, though, but my deletion has not federated to kbin. My subsequent reply to this test comment from kbin also hasn't come through on lemm.ee

Here's the kbin link to the full comment thread. Like I say, individual comment links are kind of useless on kbin, so you're better off searching for the posts/usernames manually on the page.

It's not limited to lemmy.world posts, either. Other problem kbin comments were on lemmy.fmhy.ml and lemmy.dbzer0.com.

Others have noticed too but there's nobody at the wheel

Could be because it's a kbin issue. I doubt our admin is snoozing on these issues, I'm sure he would fix things if he could.
