Rule 4 - Keep discussions of "media aqcuistion" limited to means and methods only.

There are other communities for that, and we don't want to get this community defederated from instances where it's a forbidden topic. Posts/comments discussing specific acts of piracy ("How do I find X show?" or "Where can I download Y film?")will be removed. For further clarification see this post

I regret my lifetime plex pass

For what reasons? I got mine on the cheap before they got rid of it for a while.

I see it as a substandard service which is getting bloat forced upon, such as live TV and other bullshit, and I don't like that I've supported such a shitty company

Do you not know that you customize everything how you’d like stuff to be displayed? I use it to stream my media anywhere and it works perfectly.

Yeah that's fine until settings get disrespected and that shit gets re-enabled, I've seen this complaint from others too so I'm not alone in it.

They also just waste time on shit like that when they could be doing useful things like adding av1 support (full disclosure they might have done that since I stopped paying attention)

Did they actually ban plex on Hetzner?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

A lot of people were sharing or selling access to their Plex libraries on Hetzner.

I have a lifetime pass and I don't use it because Jellyfin is better. Plex requires authentication through their servers, which go down very frequently, so when that happens, you're SOL if you want to stream from your own media server.

Give Jellyfin a try first if you're considering this.

You can disable the remote auth for your LAN devices in the settings. I haven't read about or tested this setting yet regarding all IPs.

Settings -> Network -> 'List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth' (e.g. 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0)

Their servers as auth proxy can also be helpful with an ISP that uses a dual stack lite version with IPv6 and no public IPv4 behind a NAT. I was able to access my PLEX server from outside via their server auth. But then again I'm not streaming videos mobile due to traffic, so I have remote auth only disabled for my LAN.

Yeah. I'm aware of that workaround, but the necessity for it shouldn't exist. I was a Plex user before they forced their auth servers on you, and having to choose between getting locked out of your own infra or opening auth on your local network is a joke.

Lifetime licenses are a scam that usually means we're a couple years away from seeing them close up shop. Company after company burns their "lifetime" users. I can't imagine Plex will be any different.
