A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Random twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Low Hanging Fruit thread.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. These include Social media screenshots with a title punchline / no punchline, recent (after the start of the Ukraine War) reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Low effort thread instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

I am not and never was a reddit mod for ncd. I never even had a verified reddit account. I'm happy to add the reddit mods as mods here if they want(pending community approval).

Honestly I don't even really want to mod I just wanted an active ncd community to read some shit posts without using reddit.

I've tried reaching out to the ncd mods over Lemmy and never got a reply so I've just assumed they gave up on moving to Lemmy.

Edit: My bad I guess they did talk to me a month ago I think. I just had no idea who they were. Screenshots for full transparency...

Most recent attempt to reach out...

Thanks for running this! ncd was one of my favorite subreddits, even though I didn't post anything myself.

If you don't mind me asking: how much time does moderating the community take out of a typical day, and what can us users be doing to make it easier and more enjoyable for you?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Usually we generate 1 or 2 reports a week. The previous two weeks we generated several an hour pretty consistently so it was stressful since it mostly involved me having to look and remove NSFW material while at work or really dumb things.

We seem to be back to not generating any reports again :) the last few days thanks everyone!

Ideally at most it's like 30 minutes a day outside of the scat incident making me constantly look to remove it and trying to shut stuff down to stop getting reports spammed.

You guys have been really good at not getting in flame wars! I really hate removing content at most if it looks like it might happen I try to post "be nice" once or more in the thread and it resolves itself.

I have not had to ban any users and only removed like 3 comments/posts this whole time outside of the scat incidents. I still have some PTSD from that.

Thanks everyone for being nice and not making being a mod worse than it needs to be!

I still don't like the responsibility. I was going to try to have you guys pick some additional mods this weekend so I could step back and play around with making another community for an unrelated interest.

I guess we will wait on what happens with the reddit mods... I want community input before we make them mods here if we go that direction. I don't really have the highest opinion for how they handled the api change stuff to cling onto power...

I also don't like how the r/NCD mods went back to SFW when Reddit threatened to remove them as mods and replace them. The NSFW-status-justifying open letter to Reddit admin with spicy links of NSFW should have been their hill to die on. It was a brilliant chess move and it should have been a "nail our colors to the [free speech] mast" moment. Then the mods backed down from it. That's why I don't want to invite them to mod here. They can't be trusted to stand up for their own freedom of conscience, even when they had nothing to lose. They won't stand up for anything else. Shit, you're doing a good job, don't get burned out. Take care of your mental health.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I agree. I'm just have a bunch of health issues that recently started happening making all of this harder to keep an eye on.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Well you know, they really didn't have a choice. Better just to guide users over to an alternate platform like here instead while laying low.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Glad to hear things are manageable. I suspect that everyone on Lemmy kinda feels a sense of ownership on the site and it makes us a bit more responsible I guess. Regardless, I hope it remains manageable in the future. Thanks again for doing this, and please let us know how we can be doing our part to make it easier on you.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah honestly everyone should keep on doing whatever they are doing it works for me. I've just had some health issues/scares that lined up with the api changes.

Thank you for your work on bring the magic of literally weaponized autism to lemmy. NCD is more or less the only thing I actually missed from Reddit. I know moderation sucks, too, so extra thanks for going above and beyond.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah thanks for being a great community it's been fun watching it grow so quickly. I kind of was expecting it to die off after the first week! 🫡

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

NCD is my tribe. My top priority on having to leave reddit was to find out where we were going to end up.

I ain't giving up on 3000 Femboy Furries Of The JSDF and never will.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Same same, deplorables-r-us all ze way. Mocking war and other horrors makes this valley of tears more bearable. I ask the Blessed Virgin to look after y'all every day, those who have been in The Shit and those who have not. I was born into NCD the day I was born in a military town. I didn't even get a giant breathing mask and a tank top. Nobody did.....

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're honestly doing great. I'm not too concerned about having the same mod team as long as we get to have the same vibe. I'm not much of a moderator but if you need help getting your bot working I might can help with that!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A bot to remove and remake/pin and the weekly post would be good. I was also considering trying to make a bot to tell people to be nice and sends a message for manual review if it generates several reports.

If you post here I will make you a mod to play around with. https://sh.itjust.works/c/ncdbottest

Ideally it should run in docker or podman so I can self host it on an existing vps.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, messaged them twice, one during the nsfw events and right after the blackout

First time I got a response I asked about a discord, and they mentioned I should check lemmy.

I didn’t get a second response when asking other mods about a discord either

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lemmy is far far better than discord for this.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed. Large Discord servers are just a jumbled mess

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Does someone want to make a ncd(Lemmy edition) discord server I would join.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm happy to help with moderation if need be. I used to help with moderating the noncrediblesoup sub (which admittedly wasn't a big sub by any means).

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah you where/are on my list of people I was going to put forward for a community aye or nay vote on. This reddit thing is kind of a wrench in my community plans.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sure thing. People can check out my (way too old) r*ddit account with the same username if they want to check out what kind of poster I am.

I say we forge on with this community for now. As much as I love and respect the OG NCD mods, they've been pretty noncommittal to the fediverse so far.

This way we at least have a growing NCD presence outside of reddit, which might provide confidence to people looking to make a move.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah the main concern is really on making some weird split feud in the ncd fedverse communities when it's not needed.

I wanted to see if the Baja zone? Or kbin or really any other ncd instances wanted to agree to be the "fallback community" in the event we are banned from here or sh.itjust.works shuts down/is mass defederated. That was for another time a few months in the future though. We can all exist but it's better if we all group up and not be split 🪓

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

For what is worth you are always welcome to create a fallback on our (iusearchlinux.fyi) instance as far as I am concerned (but hopefully thats never needed). We are pretty small but not defederated by anyone as far as I know. But I really hope you guys figure this stuff out together and get something sorted, because NCD is one of the things I miss the most from reddit.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

I just like @[email protected] aggressive support for her! 🫡

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

blahaj.zone is ... a bit disappointing. Lotsa stupid bickering over there.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah no idea really. It seemed like a fitting place for weird femboy rabid NATO shit posting. Really not a high priority at the moment. I was going to get community feedback before doing anything like that first anyways.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

To help jump start NCD on Lemmy what do you think about a bot that cross[site]posts reddit NCD posts here. You could tune it to only copy posts that have been up for a few hours and meet minimum vote threshold. Or you could ask people here to submit their reddit usernames and then only auto-copy those users' posts here.

If Lemmy has the same content that reddit does then that will go a long way towards helping increase the user base and engagement.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Yes! I would like it to be throttled enough to still generate discussions and not just turn into spamming content. The comment section was always my main draw to ncd. I love reading people's deranged takes on the world. Although as always unique self made content is usually the best kind.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Happy to help moderate NCD.

Like you, I'm not particularly interested in being a moderator I just want to see one of my favorite Reddit subs transition to lemmy. So I'm willing to put in some time to help out make that happen.

Once y'all have enough moderators I can back out if necessary.

I've moderated the subreddits so I know enough about how to do it.
