This is the place for discussing the potential collapse of modern civilization and the environment.

Collapse, in this context, refers to the significant loss of an established level or complexity towards a much simpler state. It can occur differently within many areas, orderly or chaotically, and be willing or unwilling. It does not necessarily imply human extinction or a singular, global event. Although, the longer the duration, the more it resembles a ‘decline’ instead of collapse.

What can we do to stop them?, realistically or otherwise.

@icepuncher69

This is not the recipe to save the world, but one thing you can do to help lean on the lever is disinvest from any bank that funds fossil fuel extraction. I'm not talking primarily about investment accounts. I'm talking about ordinary banking and credit cards. If you bank with Bank of America or Wells Fargo, move your money. If you have a Citibank credit card, get a credit card with someone else.

The Rainforest Action Network annually publishes a report "Banking on Climate Chaos" for consumers to look up their banks and see how dirty they are. Recommended.

Banks turn out to be surprising leverage points in the extractive industries. They're actually much larger and much more powerful than the extractive industries they lend money to. The extractive industries need banks way, way more than banks need the extractive industries. Banks could be convinced to stop funding them by social pressure, and then the extractive industries would starve and die.

I’m gonna try to keep posting a thread like this weekly, if possible. To encourage those who need it, including myself. I don’t care where you fall on the political spectrum. We’re all screwed. We don’t have to go through this alone.

Thank you for your service token boomer. I remember seeing you on reddit and glad to see quality posters make the move.

It's too late imho. I feel kind of hopeless about it, been voting for 30 years to no avail.

It is too late. Currently I am arguing about voting in politics, knowing that it doesn’t matter. But if you go full doomer you’re defeatist or “part of the problem.” They have no idea what’s coming. Heck, even I don’t and I’ve been looking at this stuff for years. It’s good to know other people get it. Don’t be hopeless though, we have the time we have. Enjoy it as best you can. I know it’s hard. I’ve been watching Kurtis Conner on YouTube for laughs, it helps. He rocks the mullet. I struggled with collapse for years. I still do from time to time. But once you accept it, you start to see how beautiful the world actually is.

Guys, please take some time to read and reflect this a bit, you dont have to, but it would be cool. So, imo, it isnt too late. Yes, everything is pretty fucked up, got you. But, try to avoid the doomish news and look for the things that are happening at the same time. For example, renawble energies are soaring World-wide and thats fucking amazing! Im trying to say that theres a lot of positive developments aswell. Try to look for those changes near you, i hope there are some. Time is becomming more of an issue, its up to you to lean back and enjoy the beauty thats left, i wont judge you since i know it can be frightening and exhausting to think about the whole Situation while making ends meet. But you said you still see beauty, i hope you chose to defend it. Because, this might be the best/last (perspective) time to do so. There are lots of ways to this. Education, connecting, whatever. Try not to be distracted, divided, we know the cause, have the data. Those in charge led to this and priorities arent switching fast enough for the best of us. And a lot of people are feeling like you and me. societal change has always been a story of anger, unrest and connection. I see some parts of history repeating, but i dont see why we should forget the parts that helped human develop.

Tldr, together ape strong :o

I think it's more important to highlight the human cost, instead of just "life" or "Earth" or "nature". Yes, they're destroying life and Earth and nature, but people don't really care.

Instead, focus on the murder. Climate change is a genocide of the global South - human life near the tropics will be essentially impossible and billions are in eminent danger. The ones that don't die immediately are going to storm the gates of Fortress Europe and Fortress America for a chance to survive, and they'll have nothing to lose.

Climate refugees are going to define this century. When they come to your town and use your resources, everyone will care.
